SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS APRIL 2008

Yes !! By popular demand we have introduced a Lego Robotics workshop run by Fizzics Education who joined us for a successful workshop in October last year.

This session we are also introducing a new presenter, Helen Dudeney. Helen is an experienced presenter who runs workshops for the Australian Gifted Association. (See her biography below). Welcome to Helen.

Hurray! Dianne is back. She will be running two crazy/fun workshops in her usual engaging style so join in!

LEGO ROBOTICS

How does a robot really work? Using laptops and the brand new NXT Lego Mindstorms robots, students are asked to complete a variety tasks whilst learning about basic programming. The programming itself is based on Lego's easy understand NXT computer program, whereby students intuitively use the simple 'drag and drop' icons to form their code. Working in pairs or threes, children are guided step by step on how to program their robot to perform precise movements as well as how to operate environmental sensors such as light and sound. An engaging workshop that offers students a chance to learn real time programming in a fun atmosphere. Presenter: Fizzics Education..Venue:Annandale Public School

MAD INVENTIONS

9.30-12noon 7-11yrs $40 Discover the secrets behind many popular toys and build your own to take home.Learn scientific methods and how to apply this knowledge in your design of gadgets that fly,climb,race,swim and/or make loud noises. SCIENCE MAGIC

 

TUES 22rd April 1.00pm-3.30pm 7-11yrs $40 Magicians entertain by using chemistry and physics mixed with a dash of psychology to fool their audience. Learn how to use science in ways that will surprise your friends and family. Make submarine eels rise and fall at your command, make liquids disappear and learn the trick of making a glass of water grow into a surprising litre. Discover the secrets behind many classic magic acts and take home a fun collection of props for your own show. Presenter: Dianne Kersting-Neverly. 4 HERBOLOGY WITH PROF. SPROUTS THURS 24th April 9.30am-11.30am 6-9yrs $40 This workshop will look at the inner workings of plants and trees. We will find out how they breathe, make their food and why they are so important to us all. In addition to exploring the science of biology each student will create their own garden to take home.Presenter: Helen Dudeney.Venue, Annandale Public School, 25 Johnston St Annandale.
5 WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET? THURS 24th April 1.00pm-3.oopm 6-9yrs $40 Our world is full of objects that can be transformed into new and different things. This is what invention and innovation is all about and you need both facts and imagination to do it. We will do a variety of hands-on activities that transform one object into something new. We will use your interest in biology and the environment along with your imagination to create your own magical creature and it's home. Experimental Science :Dianne Kersting-Neverly: Dianne continues to put the wow factor in all her workshops and has many young fans. Parents and kids rave about her Science Birthday Parties and schools compete to hire her for their after-school science club

Helen Dudeney is a private consultant who has been actively involved in working with gifted children, their parents and teachers since 1990. During this time she has run programs for 3-16yr old children and their families and conducted seminars, workshops and in-service training for parents and teachers about understanding and meeting the need of gifted children and young people. Her consultancy specialises not only in gifted children, but also those who are visual -spacial learners. She has completed the Certificate of Gifted Education at UNSW and a Masters of Adult Education. For the past 18yrs she has been a member of the NSW Association for Gifted and Talented Children Committee and held the position of President for 8 years. Helen runs Australian Gifted Support Centre, incorporating a HD Counselling, Training and Advisory Service. Ph 02 9620 6037.

Fizzics Education is a company dedicated to presenting science activities to community and school groups by running workshops and staging events. There experienced presenters keep interest high with lots of hand-on activities.

Caroline Shaw founded Terrific Scientific and organises Lab Rats. She has many years experience teaching science in classrooms and in workshops and has organised hundreds of workshops and lectures. Her mission is to create experiences which allow the natural curiosity of children to develop so that inquiry learning becomes a part of their life.
